From Angaston to Ballarat: McEvoy's continue dual-state success

Champion South Australian horseman Tony McEvoy is confident he and son Calvin’s newly shaped dual-state stable is evolving the right way heading towards the spring.

And three winners at their new home track at Ballarat on Tuesday was evidence.

The stable were successful with Festivus, My Boy Birmingham and Vahash to follow on from a weekend in Adelaide where they claimed the Listed Oaklands Plate at Morphettville with Mac ‘N’ Cheese.

McEvoy said they were rapt with just how their Ballarat operation is operating under difficult conditions in the depth of winter coupled with ever changing border restrictions.

“It’s going very well,’’ McEvoy said on RSN.

“We’re in July at Ballarat and my horses are presenting at the races with spring coats on them, that just said we’ve got our rugging right, our feed right and my team are doing a great job there,’’ he said.

McEvoy said they remained unsure just where Oaklands Plate winner Mac ‘N Cheese could find herself in the spring.

A half-sister to Exceedance and Oxley Road, Mac ‘N’ Cheese is going against her breeding showing the stable she could be a filly who will get better as she gets further in her career.

“I’m not sure where her ceiling is,’’ McEvoy said.

“If you look at her pedigree it says more speed orientated, but she’s telling me she wants to go further than the page.

“She’s come out of the race beautifully,’’ he said.

McEvoy said it wasn’t until a post-race discussion with jockey Barend Vorster that he was aware of the issues she had at the star when a horse drawn her inside jumped awkwardly.

“It wasn’t totally her fault, but it was a tough watch,’’ he said.
