Lane returns for key Morphettville rides

Star jockey Damian Lane heads to Adelaide for the first time since winning the 2020 Adelaide Cup for key rides for the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable at Morphettville on Saturday.

Lane partners former top three-year-old Groundswell in the City of Adelaide Stakes (1400m), talented filly Agreeable in the H C Nitschke Stakes (1400m) and will jump from an inside gate aboard Soul Obsession early in the day.

Groundswell was placed in the 2019 Caulfield Guineas behind stablemate Super Seth and was back to his best form when winning at Bendigo last start. Racing manager Brad Taylor said the stable had identified the City Of Adelaide as an early target this campaign.

“This race was always the first target of his preparation,” Taylor said.

“He was super at Bendigo last start and has jumped out well since.

“He’s in superb order and will run well.”

Agreeable comes to Adelaide having competed against some of the better fillies in the Melbourne spring and justified a strong betting push at Caulfield to defeat Pride Of Jenni earlier this month.

“We’re very happy with her two performances back and she deserves another opportunity at black type,” Taylor said.

“She has shown she’s improved since the spring and that’s more due to the fact she has developed physically and matured.”

The stable also saddles up Soul Obsession, who hasn’t raced since winning at Adelaide back in January and takes on a handy field of older horses over the 1000m trip.

“She’s coming over to quality for the spring final in two weeks’ time,” Taylor said.

“She’s only had the one jump-out which was very good. She’s a filly who continues to improve and looks to have returned as good as last preparation.”

Lane also has a key ride in the Breeders’ Stakes, for Danny O’Brien, while he’ll also partner up with the Jamie Edwards-trained Miletus in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes.
