Spotlight on SA apprentice jockeys

The spotlight will shine on Racing SA’s apprentice jockeys on Monday night.

Morphettville racecourse will host the 2020 TAB Apprentice Academy Awards night, when a list of gongs will be handed out, including the prestigious TAB Dux of the Academy.

The 2020 awards were scheduled to be held in late November, but were postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Awards to be presented this year include:

- Simone Montgomerie Encouragement Award

- Caitlin Forrest Memorial Award

- Most winners in an Academy year

- Rising Star (junior apprentice)

- Endeavour and Sportsmanship Award

- 2020 TAB Dux of the Academy

The 2019 Dux of the Academy was Kayla Crowther, who continued her good form in 2020, including outriding her apprentice’s claim in June.

A group of 2020 graduates will also be recognised at the awards night.

Racing SA’s apprentice training supervisor, Briony Moore, said the initiative gives recognition and encouragement to South Australia’s cohort of apprentice jockeys.

“The apprentices always look forward to the awards night,” Ms Moore said.

“It’s a chance for them to be acknowledged in front of their peers, but also to recognise the achievements of others.

“Being an apprentice jockey is a lot of hard work and can often be challenging, so this annual event is due reward for their efforts over the year.

“It also provides an insight to the apprentice scene for those within the industry and beyond.”

Racing SA will keep its social media followers up to date with regular updates across the night.
