Festival focus for Balfour’s Tradewind

Ryan Balfour will target some feature races during the Adelaide Festival of Racing with promising three-year-old Tradewind after his win in the $175,000 VOBIS Gold Eureka Stockade at Ballarat on Saturday.

The son of Trust In A Gust, who won the same race seven years earlier, has banked his connections $137,950 in prizemoney in just four starts, along with $21,000 in bonuses, and the stable is confident the best is still to come.

“We think he’s still got a lot of upside,” Balfour’s racing manager Matt Kelly said.

“He’s a colt, so we’ll look at some of the bigger races both here and in Victoria in the autumn.”

It was a gun ride by Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Jye McNeil, who drove Tradewind under the leader to score a narrow win.

It was another good day in Victoria for South Australian connections.

Sisstar, the sister of star sprinting mare Sunlight, was back to her brilliant best when leading throughout with Damien Lane in the saddle. In addition, Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s stablemate, Game Keeper, was narrowly edged out in the $500,000 Ballarat Cup, running third behind Irish Flame, with SA-bred Affair To Remember splitting the pair.

Kelly, who also works for SA Thoroughbred Breeders Media, said it just continued an amazing spring for SA racing.

“How good have the SA horses performed?” Kelly said.

“It’s been a brilliant spring. We always perform well interstate but this year has been something else.”

Meanwhile it’s now going to be a big six days for SA racing, which will resume at Naracoorte on Tuesday before heading to Morphettville on Wednesday, after the metropolitan meeting from last Saturday was transferred and scratchings reinstated.

Balaklava will host Ladies Day on Thursday, Port Lincoln a twilight meeting on Friday, before racing returns to Morphettville on Saturday, ahead of Strathalbyn hosting its Langhorne Creek Vignerons Race Day on Sunday.

Racecourses will remain closed to members and the general public, with access restricted to essential participants only.
