Quay and Kah combine for Wakeful Stakes tilt

Calvin McEvoy is confident there is more to come with promising filly Victoria Quay when she tackles Saturday’s $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

The lightly-raced three-year-old makes her Victorian debut following a slashing run behind boom colt Ain’tnodeeldun in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes at Morphettville last time out.

“She arrived really well here at Flemington,’’ McEvoy said.

“She’s been very impressive, it’s exciting to see her stepping up in grade against the better fillies,’’ he said.

Despite heading into the race as a $5 second favourite behind the Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained Personal ($3.10), Victoria Quay isn’t among nominations for Thursday's Group 1 Victoria Oaks.

But McEvoy said there are ample options for the filly next year in her second race campaign.

“She’ll be going to the paddock win lose or draw and we’ll target the SA Oaks next year,’’ he said.

Victoria Quay will be ridden by Jamie Kah who has a massive book of rides and will be trying to continue her brilliant form from last weekend where she rode four winners on Cox Plate Day.

“I think Jamie Kah will really suit her,’’ McEvoy added.

“Hopefully the speed is genuine, and she can make one big run at them,’’ he said.

Kah will team with dual state trainer Phillip Stokes chasing a second successive Group 1 win aboard Mr Quickie in the Kantala over the mile and smart sprinter Octane in the TAB Stakes over 1200m.

She will also be hoping to continue her good run in combination with Danny O’Brien when she partners Cetshwayo in the $2m Group 1 Victoria Derby.
