James Jordan's Irwin Stakes Preview

What a cracking edition of this Group 3 sprint we have before us. Two legitimate Group 1 horses and a host of others on the rung below looking to assert themselves as chances in the headline races later in the carnival.

Below are my thoughts on each of the runners along with my price in a market framed to 100%.

Gytrash $2.60

Surprise winner of the Lightning first up but proved it was no fluke in his runs since. Races very well fresh and loved his recent trial win. Will probably give the speed a length or two turning but is race-fit and the one to beat.

Home Of The Brave $25.00

Not a lot of upside for the 8yo gelding and feel like he's just a moderate G2 horse at present. Two Randwick trials coming into this, the latter was pretty plain. Maps well but risking.

Viridine $20.00

He was a very promising 3yo that looked like developing into a Group 1 horse but feel like he hasn't improved much as an older horse. Can argue he's better over slightly further too. Cheap run in transit but place chance for mine.

Kemalpasa $7.75

I think he's over the odds even though he's better suited over 1200m and maybe even beyond. His trial was every bit as good as Sunlight's and maps to probably box seat. He can spoil the party, he's a real racehorse and consistency is his best attribute.

Parsifal $28.00

Has been a great buy for connections but this is a serious race. A bit plain first up on the wet track, he can improve but can't entertain horses that need improvement in a field this strong.

Arrow Lane $251.00

He'd need to pull a rabbit out of a hat on his effort last week.

Sunlight $2.95

Quality mare who should find the front here. She's had two trials and two exhibition gallops so fitness shouldn't be an issue. She improves markedly second-up in her preparations so I can't price her off her best figure here resuming. Did run 3rd in the 2019 Lightning beaten 0.6L first up though. I think she'll peak next start but obviously a winning hope here.

Everyday Lady $74.00

Her last win was 12 months ago in the Listed Manihi. Hard to come at her at WFA against this field even though she was doing her best work late last start.

Kenyan Wonder $101.00

Another progressive mare but not well in at the weights against some highly-rated opposition.
