King Kenny ready to make his Metro debut

Hong Kong apprentice Kenny Lau will step out at Morphettville on Saturday June 8 as he makes his Metropolitan riding debut.

Lau now has 45 wins and 84 placings to his name from 369 career starts. His strike rate is very good for an apprentice rider going at a 12% win and 35% place strike rate.

He brought up his first winner on ANZAC Day at Gawler last year aboard Ken Sweeney’s Our Prospect and in a nice turn of events, his first Metropolitan ride will be for the same trainer.

Lau has a ride in each of the quaddie legs on Saturday, kicking off with Sweeney’s Shining Brightly before riding Irish Mint, Spirited Match and Raheeba. His four rides are all from the three stables that have given him the most support in his 14 months in the saddle.

Across his career he’s ridden 29 starts for Ken Sweeney and that will rise to 31 after partnering Shining Brightly and Spirited Match on the weekend. He’s ridden 17 runners for Chris Bieg and partners with one of his favourites from his stable in the last race, Raheeba, who Lau has ridden to victory twice in his career.

His biggest supporter over his short career has been the Jolly yard, who he is indentured to. He’s ridden 26 runners for the yard and will partner Irish Mint for Richard & Chantelle on Saturday.

Lau has deserved his chance in the city after a great season which has seen him register 32 wins around the country and also saw him contest his first Listed race.

TRSA Manager of Industry Training Briony Moore believes that Lau is ready for his chance to ride in the city after a big couple months in the Apprentice Academy.

“Kenny has been working extremely hard over the last few months on his personal development with his fitness and riding style with his Metropolitan approval being his main goal”

“Kenny’s great attributes are that he is a natural light weight due to his size and he is a very strong athletic rider.”

Lau will now join his fellow countryman Gary Lo riding in the city after he debuted at Morphettville last month and brought up his first Metropolitan winner last weekend aboard God’s Penny for Phillip Stokes.
