Temps Voleur - A 'Bieg' win in the Balaklava Cup

Young Morphettville trainer Chris Bieg has only held his Trainer’s license since 2011 and added another big race victory to his C.V. when Temps Voleur recorded a brave victory in the $100,000 Heiniger Balaklava Cup.

Ridden by Victorian apprentice Georgina Cartwright, Temps Voleur after a moderate beginning was able to utilise barrier two and drive through and lead in the 1600 metre feature event. Despite being well and truly headed in the home straight by eventual minor placegetters Tatoosh and Special Diva, Temps Voleur rallied strongly to score narrowly in a busy finish.

Chris Bieg was also represented in the Cup by Excites Zelady, who after settling well back, failed to get into the race. Excites Zelady, a three times winner of the Murray Bridge Gold Cup, had gone close to giving the stable success in the Balaklava Cup two years ago when runner up to Little Akie.

For winning jockey Georgina Cartwright, the Cup was the biggest success in her career to date and came immediately after her win in the main sprint on Cup Day. Riding the Wayne Francis and Glen Kent prepared Showpero in the Coopers Dry Flying Handicap, they were able to snatch a last stride victory over Desert Lashes.

Earlier on the program Jamie Kah and Raquel Clark had both also ridden doubles and with Krystal Bishop chipping it with a winner as well, Heiniger Balaklava Cup Day certainly proved to be a great day for the girls, riding seven of the nine winners on the card.

Tony McEvoy took training honours on the day with a double but that tally could have easily been far greater. Three seconds and two thirds were also racked up by his stable, and in the Cup he provided fourth and fifth across the line with Silvera and Brown Ben respectively. Neither horse had much luck over the concluding stages.
