Thoroughbred Racing SA provides the following update on the condition of jockey Matthew Neilson who was injured following a fall during the opening race at Morphettville yesterday.

Matthew was riding the Gordon Richards-trained Charossa when the incident occurred near the 300-metre mark. He was treated on the scene before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a suspected neck fracture, a fracture in his back, fractured ribs and a punctured lung.

He has since been diagnosed with four fractured vertebrae (C1, C2, C4 and T5) but doctors have confirmed there is no damage to his spinal cord and it is not anticipated that he will require surgery. It’s expected he will be walking within a few days and will wear a neck brace for 4-6 weeks.

Matthew is resting comfortably and he and wife Trish would like to express their sincere appreciation for the many messages of support they have received.
